Until you’ve lost your clutch cable while coming to a stop in the middle of an intersection, waiting to make a left.

Kinja'd!!!

And you haven’t experienced a real sweat until you’ve walked a bike two miles in 108 degree weather.

Cable adjustment flew off somehow so the lost all tension. I waited for the red than ran like hell through to intersection. If the road was empty I would have just popped the clutch and wheelied down the street home.

40 years ago, the rule of thumb was to always shift to neutral at a stop light, because clutch cables were that unreliable.

You’re just keeping the heritage alive!

had EXACTLY that happen to my old Versys. Getting it home was an exercise in: oh this poor starter motor LOL.

I have old bikes, luckily I have AAA RV membership, I think $150 a year, which allows up to X4 free (up to 100- mile distance) tows that includes motorcycles.

So breaking down up in the mountains won’t cost me a few hundred dollars to get back home. Also includes the regular free tows, gas, battery boost, tire changes, etc. that comes with regular AAA service.

This bike is almost fifty years  old, so makes sense. Unfortunately this happened on a green light.

Unfortunately this bike doesn’t make enough torque to fire up and go, and the throttle can be a bit of an on/off switch. I did once get a Corvair home via the starter bump.

It never occurred to me to try bumping a car or bike forward w the starter... But I'm going to have to file that trick away in my brain for later

How about losing the shift lever whilst riding? I’m grateful that I still had the clutch and could pull over without destroying anything.

I did walk about half a mile down the road where I made the last shift and actually found the offending bolt in the middle of the road . Since that bike was my only transportation at the time I had no idea what I was going to do to get things going again if I didn’t find it; parts departments weren’t open on Sunday, and I couldn’t have gotten there even if they were. And I still had to get to work the next day.

That happened on my 450, but I was just putting down a neighborhood street at 25mph. Would not have been fun at speed.

I have so many friends around town with pickups (plus my own) that I’ve never bothered. Was gonna call my wife, but I’d have made it home by the time she got to me and I loaded it up. I always carried the towing for my classic cars, though. Wouldn’t want to walk them home.

That makes sense, it’s really if you are going to hit the mountain roads or canyons away from home.  Or take a trip to another town or something like that.

On the bright side, the nearest place where I stopped was a strip club called The Wild Goose. I popped in there to use the phone (pre cellphone days)  and, well, my calls took a little longer than normal...

I had the transmission fail in my truck at 65mph on the interstate. When I exited, I discovered that when fifth gear failed, it took the clutch with it. The last four miles home were in stop and go traffic on local roads with me rev matching so I could shift. I got caught at two lights. I was fortunate that the starter had enough torque to start the truck without the clutch. That was a memorable trip if not a fun one.
